As a centre for empirical legal research at Freie Universität Berlin, we link and bundle data-based research on law and society. FUELS considers itself a scientific platform for various research projects and fields and the center promotes scientific and legal theoretical reflection on the use of empirical findings in law. Additionally, FUELS facilitates the teaching and exchange of empirical methods by offering training and advice (e.g. for doctoral students) and by regularly discussing methodological aspects of individual papers at our events.
The Center is characterized by a broad understanding of the methodology of empirical legal research. Projects at FUELS use both quantitative and qualitative social science empirical methods such as surveys, interviews, court records evaluation, experiments and the analysis of observational data.
