Restorative Approaches to Corporate Responsibility: Insights from the European Directive on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence
Seminar with Daniela Gaddi (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona)
The new European Directive on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence (CSDDD), which - as for now - shall be transposed by the EU member States by 26 July 2026, requires specific companies to address actual adverse impacts of their operations on human rights or the environment throughout the entire supply chain. A key aspect of this obligation is the active involvement of relevant stakeholders, who play a crucial role in promoting and participating in the remediation process.
This emphasis on stakeholder participation aligns with the concept of "corporate restorative justice" (CRJ), a recent framework focused on corporate accountability, harm repair, and inclusive dialogue among all parties involved. CRJ aims to develop joint solutions that address the consequences of corporate misconduct effectively.
During the seminar, initial findings will be presented from an ongoing research project that explores the potential of the CSDDD to foster restorative remediation of corporate misconduct, examining the normative and practical conditions necessary to ensure that stakeholder engagement is meaningful and effective.
