Professor Harold H. Koh on “Inside the Biden Administration’s Approach to International Law and Institutions”
The Berlin Potsdam Research Group “The International Rule of Law – Rise or Decline?” takes great pleasure in inviting you to a public lecture by Professor Harold H. Koh , Yale University, on “ Inside the Biden Administration’s Approach to International Law and Institutions ”. The Biden Administration entered office with an ambitious plan to restore international law and institutions following the Trump years. After an eventful sixteen months, capped by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, how is its plan succeeding? Professor Koh—former State Department Legal Adviser, Senior Advisor in the Biden Administration’s first year, and currently Counsel for Ukraine in its World Court cases against Russia—gives an insider’s assessment. Harold Hongju Koh is Professor of International Law at Yale University. He is an expert in public and private international law, national security law, and human rights. From 2009 to 2013, he served as Legal Adviser of the U.S. Department of State, service for which he received the Secretary of State's Distinguished Service Award. He has also served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor from 1998 to 2001. Professor Koh has received seventeen honorary degrees and more than thirty awards for his human rights work, including awards from Columbia Law School and the American Bar Association for his lifetime achievements in international law. He has authored or co-authored eight books, published more than 200 articles, testified regularly before Congress, and litigated numerous cases involving international law issues in both U.S. and international tribunals. He is a Fellow of the American Philosophical Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, an Honorary Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford, and a member of the Council of the American Law Institute. The lecture will take place on Thursday, 2 June 2022, at 6.15 pm at Senatssaal, Humboldt University Berlin (Unter den Linden 6, 10117 Berlin). We look forward to welcoming you.
