Public Event: Thomas Franck Lecture by Professor Benedict Kingsbury

22.09.2022 | 18:15

he Berlin Potsdam Research Group "The International Rule of Law: Rise or Decline?" takes great pleasure in inviting you to a public lecture by Professor Benedict Kingsbury, New York University, on

"Updating the International Law Endowment in the Era of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence".

The "international law endowment" is an important accreting resource in global ordering, tolerably resilient to the jolts of power shifts and discordant politics. Data-driven infrastructural power and deepening of artificial intelligence systems, arriving at the same time as planetary-scale anthropogenic challenges, pose challenges that require some transformation as well as adaptation. This lecture develops some proposals and considers their implications for the international law of the future.

Benedict Kingsbury is Professor of Law at New York University as well as director of the Institute for International Law and Justice and faculty director of the Guarini Institute for Global Legal Studies at which he also directs the Global Tech Law Project launched in 2018. His broad, theoretically grounded approach to international law closely integrates work in legal theory, political theory, and history. His current research focuses on infrastructure; global data law; and vaccines issues. With NYU colleague Richard Stewart, he helped pioneer the field of Global Administrative Law; their most recent joint books are Megaregulation Contested (2019), and Global Hybrid and Private Governance (2022). He has written on a wide range of international law topics, from indigenous peoples issues to interstate arbitration, investor-state arbitration, and indicators and rankings. As to the latter, recent co-edited volumes include The Quiet Power of Indicators (2015) and Governance by Indicators (2012).

The lecture will take place on Thursday, 22 September 2022, at 6.15 pm at Senatssaal, Henry Ford Building, Freie Universität Berlin (Garystraße 35, 14195 Berlin).

We look forward to welcoming you.
