Department Professor and Lecturer in Law (visiting)
Fachbereich Rechtswissenschaft, Freie Universität Berlin
Professor Marshall is a University Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Law at the School of Law, University of Reading and a College Lecturer and Supervisor in Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom (external, visiting). Since summer 2020, Professor Marshall has served as a Department Professor and Lecturer in Law at the Fachbereich Rechtswissenschaft, Freie Universität Berlin, Germany (external, visiting) having earlier served in the same capacity as the penultimate Erasmus Professor and Lecturer in Law (summer, 2019-2020), during which period he took up his full-time tenured role at the University of Reading.
Professor Marshall is the founding Module Convener and Director of Studies of a highly rated course at the Freie Universität Berlin entitled "An Introduction to Common Law (England and Wales and the International “Commonwealth” Legal System) (ICL). In conjunction with a number of other modules that form a part of the FU Berlin Staatsexamen I and II, LLB, LLM and PhD offering, the module explores the origins and development of modern common law, and how the system specifically operates within the jurisdiction of England and Wales. Later in the module, lectures and tutorials turn to consider how the common law operates within some of the commonwealth and international systems featured, which include lectures by a number of leading lawyers from these jurisdictions. Overall, the aim of the ICL module is to offer attendees a broad introduction to the ideas, principles, and sources that underpin the common law’s contemporary operation and set up (in England and Wales, and the other countries covered); the distinct branches or ‘jurisdictions’ and areas of legal practice that exist within it, and the institutions, personnel, customs, and methods that are essential to its everyday function.
Please see Prof. Marshall's "Kontakt" tab for more on the module availability and how to get in touch with him and/or the Studien-, Prüfungs- und Internationales Büro at the Fachbereich Rechtswissenschaft.
