Study Abroad at the FU Berlin Law School in the Winter Term 2021/22

As far as it looks at present (June 2021), the Law School will return to on-site teaching in the fall 2021. However, a few courses will probably continue to be taught online.

A virtual exchange term (staying at home while studying at Freie Universität Berlin online) will not be possible. We expect all incoming exchange students to be present in Berlin from early October.

Orientation Days

For an overview on the dates and events offered during our orientation period, please have a look at the above-mentioned website. Most orientation events will be online. However, we plan to have your campus tour in-person.

Please take the opportunity to join all events! In a semester where most on-campus acitivities will be suspended, it will be vital to meet your fellow students from the beginning, even if only online.

The Law School's online study info session is mandatory. If you don't take part, you may miss important deadlines.

When you plan your journey and arrival, please take into account that you may have to go into quarantine and that you may need to show a negative Covid-19 test upon arrival. Detailed information is available on the Website of our Federal Ministry of Health.

Lecture Period

The teaching period of the summer term remains unchanged. Please check out the above-mentioned website for more detailed information.

Teaching Method

All courses will be given in the online mode. You can decide if you move to Berlin, or if you study at FU Berlin virtually from your home country.

Exam Period

English-taught courses and other courses taught in foreign languages:
Should you take non-German law courses only, you will probably be done with exams at the end of the lecture period (July 17th, 2021).

German-taught courses:
Some of these courses will have their exams in the last week of the lecture period, others during the exam period for the regular, degree-seeking students. The exam period for degree-seeking students may last until well into August 2021. Since all exams will be online, you may return to your home country after the end of our lecture period and take the remaining exams from home.

Orientation Days

There will be a mixture of online events and in-person events (i.e. campus tour) over a period of two weeks from 19 to 30 October. The online study info session at the Law School is mandatory. If you don't take part, you may miss important deadlines.

When you plan your arrival, please take into account that you may have to go into quarantine for 14 days before you are allowed to join in-person events.

Lecture Period

The courses are going to start on Monday, 2 November and will continue until Saturday, February 27th.

There will be a Christmas break from December 19th, 2020 to January 2nd, 2021.

If you have planned to come to Berlin in the winter term only, please check if the end of our winter term overlaps with the beginning of the spring term at your home university. If so, please contact your coordinator at home and discuss if this is going to be a problem or not. Should you realize that it will not be possible to spend the winter term at FU Berlin and the spring term at your home university, please discuss with your home university's coordinator if you can study in Berlin in the summer term instead of the winter term, or if you wish to stay in Berlin during the full academic year. If you change your study term, please ask your home university to inform us via e-mail.
