In the current era of globalization nearly all areas of law are subject to supranational or international regulation. The research profile of Freie Universität Berlin's Law Department reflects this internationalization of the legal order and focuses on international and transnational aspects of law. Students of the Law Department have the option to benefit from this expertise in international law by chosing the specialization "The Internationalization of the Legal Order" in their fourth year of study.

The Law Department promotes different forms of teaching staff exchange and joint research projects between local and foreign scholars such as the Center for Transnational Legal Studies in London, or the international research training group "Human Rights under Pressure".
