The Law Department of Freie Universität Berlin has been working in the International Legal Network of Excellence since 2006/07. The Themis network has been founded by the Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi (Milan), the Universidad Ramón Llull de Barcelona – ESADE Law School, the Université Paris Est Créteil and Freie Universität Berlin.

Later on, the Universiteit Maastricht, the Singapore Management University, the Business University Vienna, the University of St. Gallen, the National Taiwan University, the Victoria University of Wellington and the City University of Hong Kong joined the project.

This contact gives students of the participating universities the possibility to be awarded the „Joint Certificate in International and Business Law“.

This business and international law-oriented studies and practice programme extends over one academic year and is divided into three main components:

Exchange Semester

In the winter semester the program participants complete a business and international law-oriented study abroad period at a partner university with 24-30 ECTS credit points.

Internship

Themis students are expected to complete an internship of at least six weeks in an international law firm with a business law focus, or in the Legal Department of an internationally operating company, or in an international organisation.

Seminar

All programme participants come together for a three days' seminar at one of the European network universities in the spring each year.
