Biography

 

Professor Dr Philip Kunig, Freie Universität Berlin, born in 1951, studied Law and Sinology in Hamburg. He passed his State Examinations in Law in 1976 and 1980. He was a Graduate Research Assistant, subsequently a Research Fellow at the Institute of International Affairs in Hamburg, where he received his doctor’s degree in 1980 and attained his habilitation in 1985, supervised by Professor Dr Ingo von Münch. Having been Professor in Hamburg and Heidelberg, he became Professor of Public Law, Public International Law and Environmental Law at the Freie Universität Berlin in 1988. Professor Kunig rejected offers for chairs in Heidelberg, Kiel and Regensburg. From 1992 to 2000, he served as a Judge at the Constitutional Court of Berlin. From 1992 to 2004, he was an elected member of the board of reviewerss of the German Research Foundation (DFG). From 2001 to 2002, Professor Kunig was Deputy Dean, from 2002 to 2004 he was Dean of the Faculty of Law of the Freie Universität Berlin. Since then until 2011 he was a member of the Academic Senate of the University. Until 2010 he was also coordinator for the relations of Freie Universitat with the Centre of German Studies at Beijing University. Since 2009, Professor Kunig is Vicepresident of the German Consortium for the German-Turkish University Istanbul.
